How Artificial Intelligence Can Help You Live Better

Updated: Oct 10

Artificial intelligence, or AI, used to be a thing of science fiction movies, but today, it's here and it's involved in our everyday lives. AI is so pervasive that we don't even notice it working in the background and yet, if it wasn't there, our lives wouldn't run as seamlessly.

The little things today that we take for granted are actually the results of many years of hard work and technological advancements. And it seems that we're only at the tip of the iceberg.

As technology continues to advance, AI will be used more frequently and in more industries. While there is still some debate about how far AI can (and should) go, there's no denying that it really does make the little things in life run smoothly.

Here are 7 ways in which AI is helping us live better:

1. Digital assistants -

Once you start using a digital assistant like Siri or Alexa, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it. These assistants are based on AI they learn from user interactions and rely on natural language generation and processing. They are also constantly being upgraded by their respective companies to respond better to human voices, to sound more human themselves, and to perform a plethora of other tasks.

2. Home security -

Modern home security systems use AI to help keep your home safe. AI-integrated alarm and camera systems use machine learning and facial recognition software to identify strangers immediately. In a similar vein, AI is used in general home automation, which can include letting family members know when you're home, tracking movements of pets, notifying emergency services, turning on lights, locking doors, and more.

3. Social media -

Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram use AI to enhance their user experience. This includes using AI to fight racist or inappropriate content, delete offensive comments and prevent cyberbullying. These platforms are also using AI to review your web searches and interactions to create personalized social media experiences.

4. Self-driving vehicles and parking -

AI and machine learning are used by many self-driving and parking cars to determine the space around the vehicle. This allows cars to drive, navigate and park without any human at the wheel. This technology is already being used by some of the leading auto companies like Toyota, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Tesla.

5. Transportation apps -

Uber has been hailed as one of the original "AI-first" companies, meaning, AI is at the core of its operating system. Uber uses AI to improve its customer service experience, including letting customers know when their driver will arrive and how long it will take to arrive at their destinations. Lyft also uses machine learning and has plans to deploy an AI-based autonomous vehicle network that can handle some of the workloads of Lyft drivers.

6. Google -

Google uses AI to ensure that your emails get sorted between your folders correctly so that the spam doesn't go into your inbox and vice versa. Google also uses AI for predictive searches, which is when you start typing something into Google search and then you're shown a list of options.

7. Healthcare -

There is currently a lot of research underway about how AI can improve the healthcare system. In studies, AI has already been used to identify treatment for thousands of individuals and to predict the outcome of hospital visits. There is so much potential for AI in the healthcare field that Microsoft recently announced a 5-year $40-million program called AI for Health, which will use AI to tackle some of the biggest healthcare challenges today.

When you have a lot of small little comforts and conveniences in life, it leaves room for you to tackle the really important issues, like your health, relationships, work, and sleep. Fortunately, we live in a time when AI is able to afford us these small comforts.
